Both the Biblical Job and the Carmelite mystic Thérèse of Lisieux felt utterly forsaken by God in their worst hours. Both found a strategy for enduring their own distress by not abandoning God when God seems to have abandoned them. We look at both their stories (with art and photographs) and their stunning inner transformation within their dark nights of the soul. How can we develop a stance of prayer that will endure and even transfigure in God’s apparent absence? How might our struggle lend strength to others in times of distress and darkness?
The Rev. Suzanne Guthrie has served the church as pastor, college and university chaplain, Christian education consultant, writer, and retreat leader. She posts a weekly “self-guided retreat” on the coming Sunday’s Gospel at www.EdgeOfEnclosure.org. Suzanne has four grown children and two grandchildren and lives with her husband, Bill, in Citrus Heights, California.
