Without Shame or Fear: From Adam to Christ

June 22–24 (Friday dinner–Sunday lunch)

Without Shame or Fear: From Adam to Christ

Shame has been described as a “master emotion” in that it underlies, energizes, and even quietly dominates so many of the ways we live in the world. One way shame can “master” us is by giving us the false message that not only have we made a mistake, we are a mistake. Looking at certain passages in the Bible and at examples in art and cinema, this conference will offer us an opportunity to consider prayerfully how shame has functioned in our lives, in society, and in the Church. We will be invited to consider how Jesus takes on our shame so that we can enjoy the holy freedom and deep joy God desires for us. We will explore our experience of shame through brief talks, small group discussion, prayer, and silence.

The Rt. Rev. A. Robert Hirschfeld served as a parish priest in New England for 23 years before becoming the tenth bishop of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire in 2012. He enjoys painting, reading and writing poetry, hiking, and sculling on the Merrimack River near Concord, New Hampshire.
